You Mind and Your Goals

As we roll into Thursday, it’s been a great week so far. Thinking about that great thing we call a brain, I am reminded of the movie, “A League of Their Own,” where Tom Hanks plays a baseball great who is coaching a women’s baseball league. He tells one of the girls to use her head, and lets them all know it’s that lump three feet above their butts. I love the film, although I never like to refer to my head as a lump above my butt!

This week we have seen that we must use our heads, must think to find what we truly want and believe in ourselves once we find it. I did this myself, to truly understand that I waned to be an entrepreneur. I understand the good and the bad of it.

We also talked about belief, for no matter what we want, we cannot do what’s next – program our mind to get what we want – if we do not believe we can get it, or if we do not believe we deserve it. This is something that took me years to master. For a long time I believed that I did not deserve what I wanted. I did not believe I could succeed at this business or any other.

And that is where we were yesterday, with programming. I had to reprogram my mind to believe that (one) I deserve what I want in life, and (two) I can actually do what I want and be successful at it. That is where my brain actually became more then the lump above my butt, or the big ball on my shoulders. It actually turned into the magic thing I like to call a gift from God.

So what is next with this wonderful, beautiful mind? I now must set the goals to achieve what I really want.

Currently, I am in the middle of designing this company to actually reach a personal goal in my life. This week I am on the road, riding my motorcycle from Dallas, Texas to a small town where my dad and mom have a home: Reeders, Pennsylvania. While I know that I’m going there to work and help mom go through things that were Dad’s as we prepare the house to sell it, to me it’s just lifting and moving junk. What I’m looking forward to is the motorcycle ride up there.

I love to ride my bike, to take trips, to be able to ride someplace, spend a day or two there and ride around. I ride to almost all my business events. It is really wild for those who have been at my speaking events to see that I have a Harley in the parking lot, and know that is how I got there.

So what does this have to do with my goal? Well my partner and I are building this business, as well as our other company. The idea behind this is to be able to take trips together on our bikes and to actually make these trips an event. That is why we are planning the Road Trip workshop in September of this year. But to build a life where we both can do this takes special thinking, special planning. Most people who want to have a lifestyle like this work a job that will give them a good amount of money and take time off to make the road trip. Instead we are using our minds to build a business that will go along with our lifestyle and enjoy life while we work. Not to have to come home and spend eleven months working a job to raise money to take just a fun trip next year.

So how do we use the mind to do this? I have been a creative thinker for most of my adult life. I am usually thinking of goals to work towards. For example, this week I am using another internet community to broaden my group friends worldwide. It was introduced to me by my good friend, The Linkedin Rockstar, Mike O’Neil. It’s called Couchsurfing, and is a world community of people who share homes and their town with visitors.

On this trip to Pennsylvania, I planned to spend all but one night this way. Except for one night with my Aunt and Uncle in Virginia, I will be staying with other writers through Couchsurfing. Who knows? Maybe I’ll even write a blog about my travels and meeting them.

But that is not what this post is about. It is about using this trip to work towards my bigger goals. After all, I had to use my mind to think about this trip. I want to better myself as a writer. So I’m going to meet writers all the way along my route. Then when I return back to Dallas next month, I have goals to make a purpose of that return trip. I will find writers to stay with. I will also take a pre-ride of the route I’m planning for our Road Trip Workshop in September.

So my point is, as you have things you must do in life – things that may not seem like they’re related to your ultimate dream – use your mind to set goals to help you reach that purpose you found. You know, we started this week finding what you really want; each goal we spoke of should be like a compass directing you towards what you really want.
