How To Find Your Purpose

Each and every week I get to talk with people all over the world who want to know the answer to this very question: “How do I find out my purpose in this life?” A few years back it was a best-selling book by a great pastor out in California. The book is “The Purpose Driven Life.” It made great conversations and many people jumped to read this because they wanted that one question answered in their own lives.

While in this short post I cannot tell everyone their purpose, I can give you some great guidelines about how you can search your own self and find out what your purpose is. As I said this is what I do on a daily basis and it is typically the first session I have with any of my clients. What would I coach you towards if you don’t know what you want, what your purpose is? Imagine how many people are uncertain of what they should be doing with their lives each day. They feel like they are just passing time, taking up space. Well I personally feel each of us has a purpose in life and to find that purpose may take a little digging.

First, let’s go back in time to when you were a child. Did you ever have a dream of being something, a dream to actually make a difference in this world? Now, as an adult, do you dream of this, of finding that place where you fit in and where you will make a difference? Thomas Edison dreamed of this when he was young – dreamed of not having to use candles as our only source of light. As a result, he ultimately invented the light bulb. When I was young, I dreamed of finding my place in this world and as I grew older, realized I didn’t want it to include working eight-hour days for someone else and I realized I truly wanted to find a way to make people’s lives better.

As an investment company, our purpose is about service, going the extra mile in providing those who needed a home with a better place than they could get in the same area for the same money. And thus, X2 Investments was born. No, we are not making millions. What we do is offer homes for those who are willing to take care of the small place they have to make it better. They live better, they feel better about themselves because they go home to a place with pride.

Then I created Rocker Life Coach – a coaching company that was built to help people find the true passion that drives them, show how that passion, that the dream they have been given inside points to a purpose. I want to help them build a step-by-step process to get to where they want to be in life.

So with this I’m going to give you three things to think on, to help you find your purpose:

  1. As a child you were given a dream. This could be something you wanted to be, or somewhere you wanted to live. What was that dream. When you said, “When I grow up I want to be________” how did you fill in the blank? Do you still dream of this thing? If not, how would you answer that question today?
  2. As an adult, what is the most fulfilling job you have had? What job did you have when you did not look at the clock each day, counting the minutes until it was time to go home? What job were you working when you wanted to do the best job you could?
  3. Have you ever taken a “Spiritual Gifts Test?” I have taken a few of these. They are designed to help you to see the talents that God put inside of you. They show you areas that are strengths. There are other self-learning or self-awareness tests. I suggest you look into them as they can help point you in a direction. I do caution you about some of these tests: there are many sites out there that offer a self test designed just to lead you toward a certain field in which they provide training. Many people have taken these tests, then spent thousands on schooling only for find out they hate what they do.  Find tests that tell you who you are. Not a sales pitch to get you to join a learning program.

These are some starters to help you find your purpose. While this in only a brief idea, there are many ways to research to find your purpose.
